    1955 Arrival of BMW Isetta

    Isetta was designed as a short-distance purposed vehicle also called a microcar. It was developed by Iso, an Italian company that later sold the rights to BMW. BMW made its own Isetta. In 1955, BMW Isetta also known as ‘bubble car’ because of its egg-shaped body style and bubble-like windows came to market.

    Production 

    Iso SpA, an Italian company which used to build refrigerators, motor scooters and small trucks, decided to come up with a small car for mass distribution. By 1952, the car was designed and was named Isetta. Later on BMW designed its own Isetta featuring the same exterior design but different components. 

    BMW introduced Isetta Moto Coupe DeLuxe with redesigned windows and it offered better raod performance. BMW also launced a new Isetta 600 version that featured a long wheelbase to accommodate upto 4 people with more powerful 582 cc twin engine. More than 160,000 units of the modle were sold worldwide.

    Interesting Fact-

    Isetta drivers only needed a motorbike licence; they didn’t need a costly automobile licence.

    A BMW Isetta was used to move individuals from East to West Berlin, and it also served as the company’s post-World War II rebirth vehicle.
