Europe’s capacity to create captivating, expertly constructed vehicles did not decline as World War II drew closer. Take the Audi 920, which was publicly unveiled at the Berlin Automobile Show in February 1939. The brand-new German autobahn infrastructure influenced the Audi 920’s modern style. The majority of cars from the classic era were designed for country roads and gentrified city streets, and they worked best at slow speeds. However, the German automobile standard was altered by the autobahns. With its potent engine and cutting-edge, wind-swept design, the Audi 920 displayed considerable technical versatility.

The Design
With its 920 models, the Audi brand returned to rear-wheel drive in 1939. In terms of technology and design, this car, created by Auto Union’s Central Development and Design Office, was of the highest caliber. Its 75 hp six-cylinder OHC engine, whose design was inspired by the Horch in-line eight-cylinder unit, was mounted on the Wanderer W23’s chassis. The four-speed transmission, which was operated by a floor-mounted lever and transferred power to the rear wheels instead of the 920’s avant-garde front-wheel drive system, was a technological step backward. Semi-independent front suspension and a swing-axle setup were both features of the box-section chassis.
