Benz introduced the first four-wheeled automobile in 1893, the model “Victoria” also came in a four-seated version with benches facing each other, known as the “Vis-à-Vis” version. CLcompany is delighted to feature the facts about the 1893’s Classic Benz Victoria.

    Flashback

The Benz motor company produced the Viktoria between 1893 and 1900. When it was originally sold, it was very popular all over Germany. The fact that Benz’s first automobile was a tricycle contributed to its poor commercial performance. So starting in 1891, Benz set out to find a solution to the front wheel steering issue. He achieved this two years later by allowing the wheels to swivel freely on kingpins, for which he was given a patent. The name Victoria for the new vehicle represented victory over the steering issue. The path was paved for four-wheeled vehicles with the development of an efficient axle-pivot steering (DRP 73151 of Februar 28, 1893) design.

    The Design

Victoria had a completely innovative design. The kingpin steering mechanism, which Benz improved, allowed the two front wheels to assume separate cornering radii, enabling the vehicle to navigate bends more safely. The Benz Victoria was fitted with a horizontal single-cylinder engine. At the back of the vehicle, a four-stroke water-cooled engine was attached. Flat belts and two chains were used to power the rear axle. The back wheels’ solid rubber tyres were controlled by the hand brake. The model was 2.9m (9ft 6in) long.
