For the manufacturing of the new 1000 MB at its main factory in Mlada Boleslav, Skoda constructed a brand-new, cutting-edge line. The stylish four-door car with a tiny drive unit in the rear of its self-supporting body was one of the most technologically advanced automobiles in the 1.0-liter class of the 1960s. Clcompany is delighted to feature the facts about the 1964’s Classic Skoda 1000 MB.

    Flashback

Skoda modified its design concept in the spring of 1964, and the 1000 MB served as another example of the Czech car industry’s engineering expertise. The groundwork for the novel paradigm was an altogether new way of thinking. There were major changes made to this model. These components may be made in much less time and with less energy according to a 1922 invention from the Czech engineer Josef Polak. Hence, Skoda carried on its 65-year legacy of engine manufacturing and design. Skoda also completely modified its production facilities to create the ground-breaking 1000 MB, and a cutting-edge production line was set up in a new area of the Mladá Boleslav plant. The self-supporting body of the four-door car was put together on this line using 6,900 welding locations and 665 pressed pieces. The 1000 MB was introduced as the successor to the popular OCTAVIA, which Skoda produced between 1959 and 1964.

The project name for the notchback model’s development was NOV (Nový Osobní Vůz), which stands for “new passenger vehicle.” The 1000 MB was put through rigorous practical tests in harsh weather at the start of the 1960s. Its final type name included information about its Mladá Boleslav (MB) birthplace. The innovatively built family car, which weighed only 755 kilos due to the heavy use of aluminum alloys, was simple to manage because of the 37 hp (27 kW) that the water-cooled in-line engine with overhead OHV valves initially provided. The Skoda 1000 MB  consumed seven to eight liters of gasoline every 100 kilometers. In 1966, a second engine, the 52 hp (38 kW) 1100 MB, was introduced to the lineup, bringing the total power output to 43 horsepower (32 kW). The MBX two-door version, which today is highly sought after by classic automobile enthusiasts, added a touch of opulence. The manual four-speed transmission’s cylinder, crankshaft, and bell housings were all built of lightweight cast aluminum.
