Skoda 110 R – the Porsche of the East

The Skoda 110 R was a rear-engined, rear-wheel drive automobile that was produced by Czechoslovakian manufacturer AZNP in Kvasiny.  The fastback coupe was a sportier version of the standard sedan Skoda S100 based on the 1000MB. The sporty two-door model is one of the Czech car manufacturer’s most iconic vehicles. Clcompany is delighted to feature the facts about the 1970’s Classic Skoda 110 R coupe.

    Flashback

While Western European automakers concentrated on creating small, attractive, front-wheel-drive hatchbacks in the 1970s, Skoda continued to adopt the rear-engined design strategy pioneered by the 1000MB on the other side of the Iron Curtain.

It gave rise to the 100 saloons, which was followed by the 110. Despite going against the grain, these workhorses did give birth to a sporty two-door: the 110 R. The 110 R stands out from its four-door competitors thanks to its sloping roofline, sloped rear windscreen, and sleek front end. It also has grilles that are carved into the rear wheel arches.

    Years in production – 1970 to 1980

    The Design

The car had a flat panel in front with no grille and four spherical headlights. That was because the water-cooled engine was in the back. The car’s fenders and doors were flush, and its aerodynamic profile was improved. Skoda added bumpers with rubber shock absorbers and chromed metal.

For its day, the interior was magnificent. There were two bucket seats up front. Skoda fitted a floor-mounted gearstick between them. The center stack, which had a radio on it as an option in front of it, connected the dashboard with the center console. A glove box and five dials were available on the flat dashboard in front of the passenger. There was seating for two passengers, primarily kids, in the back.
