History
In 2014, Autocar India and Mercedes-Benz India collaborated to create the Mercedes-Benz Classic Car Rally, a tribute to the brand’s unparalleled heritage and its ongoing relationship with Indian auto lovers. The goal was to organise a top-notch event that honoured India’s unique automotive history while showcasing rare vintage Mercedes vehicles. What began as a small-scale gathering of collectors quickly evolved into a yearly showcase of style and technical prowess.
Since its start, the rally has grown in size and stature every year. More than 80 painstakingly rebuilt automobiles, ranging from pre-war classics like the W136 170V to post-war icons like the 300SL Gullwing and the W111 Fintail, were on display in the more recent editions, which featured approximately 30–40 cars. Maharajas, antique car groups, and private collectors from all around India have also brought their vehicles to the event.
Symbol of India’s Restoration Culture:
The rally has been instrumental in resurrecting the country’s vintage car restoration activity. Many young engineers, craftspeople, and restorers were motivated to take on the task of preserving and revitalising vintage cars. Workshops in Delhi, Pune, and Mumbai started specialising in Mercedes classics, employing period-appropriate procedures to restore everything from upholstery to engines.
