The Audi 100 Coupé S is a sporty fastback coupe Grand tourer class vehicle that was manufactured by the German company Audi AG.  The vehicle made its debut in 1969 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Clcompany is delighted to feature the facts about the Classic 1969’s Audi 100 Coupé S.

    Background

Volkswagen acquired the Auto Union plant from Ingolstadt in order to increase production capacity for the hugely successful Beetle. They received the 80 model as part of the deal, but VW didn’t take it seriously. The 100 was a novel car that a group of engineers developed privately. When they revealed it to the VW management, they liked it. It was a great success that saved the Audi name. The 100 Coupe S fastback coupe version was created by the same developers in 1970. It wasn’t as popular as its four-door sibling, but it was still a popular car that raised the German manufacturer’s profile.

    The Design

The 100 Coupe S used the same double headlight front fascia and large four-ring grille badge with its four-door sibling. For Audi, its sloping roofline and raked windscreen were novel features. Four vents were added to the C-pillars and a second set of side windows were added behind the narrow B-pillars.

The front-wheel-drive coupe, which was created in-house, has an attractive fastback, a lengthy 100.8-inch wheelbase, and a length of 173.1 inches. It also boasts an Italian design. Its overhead-valve, 1.9-liter, four-cylinder Mercedes-Benz engine is equipped with two Solex carburetors. It initially produced 115 horsepower and had a four-speed manual transmission. Originally 30,687 units were produced.

Because it had a front engine and front-wheel drive, the automobile had a lot of interior space. The dashboard of the 100 Coupe S has wood trim and a center stack under it. The carmaker added a four-dial design to the instrument panel that also displayed the coolant temperature and fuel level, in addition to showing speed and revs. Under the hood, Audi placed a 1.9-liter, inline-four engine with a side-mounted radiator. As a result, the front overhang of the automobile was less, giving the impression that it had rear-wheel drive.
