    The year 1979, it was, when the Jetta was launched. The first of its model was referred to as MK1 and was introduced at the Frankfurt motor show.     Vintage Jetta MK1

    The Volkswagen Jetta Mk1, famously known as the “Volkswagen Atlantic” in Mexico, was available in two- and four-door variations, each with differences in size and performance specs. The success of the car was instantaneous and the Jetta became the best-selling European car in the United States. The GLI brought many improvements to the Jetta. The engine was increased to 90 horsepower and was paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The chassis benefitted from a sports suspension, stabilizer bars and ventilated disc brakes at the front.

    Interesting Facts-

    1. The Jetta, which is German for “jet stream”, was named after the Atlantic jet stream.
    2. The sedan was available with composite headlamps, but in the United States, the car was offered in rectangular sealed lamps
    3. In Europe, the third generation, introduced in 1992, dropped the Jetta name, it was called the Volkswagen Vento. The name Jetta was kept in North America.
