In 1989, the BMW Z1 entered the market and immediately became popular. Every automaker desired to produce their own, and every buyer desired one. However, the company had no intention of assembling it into a production vehicle before, so the decision to not construct the Z1 in huge quantities. However, the Z1’s demand increased after the public saw it for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and 3,500 vehicles were pre ordered before production started.

Plastic body panels and doors that slide vertically into the door sills give the Z1 a distinctive look. One of the first BMWs to utilize a multi-link rear suspension is this one. The 2.5-liter straight-six engine and 5-speed manual transmission from the E30 325i are the only drivetrain options.

    Production

The Z1 was the apex of BMW’s cabriolet production in the late 1980s and included a number of noteworthy features that set the standard for future improvements while defining the car’s distinct character.

Side doors on the vehicle slide up and down, adding to its barchetta look. BMW stated that detachable thermoplastic body panels made by GE allowed the complete body to be replaced in less than 40 minutes.
