    Why is it Special

    • The legendary design is so understated yet sophisticated that it has a wide appeal across age groups. This car just doesn’t age in its appeal.
    • Mercedes SL-500 (R107) featured a clever combination of high-strength A-pillars and front fixed glass windscreen insert to provide sturdy roll over protection.
    • The four-spoke steering wheel with large impact plate and reach-through door handles stopped the doors from springing open in the event of an accident.
    • The fuel tank was positioned above the rear axle for protection in the event of collision.
    • SL was also available with the anti-lock braking system ABS; airbag and belt tensioner from the year 1980
    • The distinctive wideband tail lights with their ribbed surface were surprisingly effective at dirt repulsion.
    • Its one of the last overengineered cars that Mercedes has ever produced.

    Powertrain

While the 2.8-litre six-cylinder inline engine carried over from 1979, new aluminium V8 engines were updated in the year 1981. 1986 model saw the introduction of the new 3.0-litre six-cylinder inline engine from the W124. 5.5-litre V8 engines & the 5.0-litre V8 engine were range toppers. To offset the emission from the big-bore engines, Mercedes-Benz offered a closed-loop catalytic converter on all passenger car models with petrol engines from the year 1985. This was effective in reducing exhaust emissions. All the models came either mated with 3 or 4-speed manual or 3 or 4-speed Automatic gearbox.

    Years of production

From 1971 to 1989 these series enjoy unbeaten record production figure of 237,287 vehicles impressively demonstrates the popularity.

    What to look for

Early ones suffered corrosion, from the 1980’s they started galvanising for rust prevention. Look for steering play. SL 500 sported RCBT type steering system and not the regular R&P system. Engines better built from 1984 onwards and hence anything after 1984 is a better bet.
